A few weeks ago, my mom (aka Nana to the boys) celebrated her 60th birthday. My brothers and I tried really hard to make this birthday extra special for her. So, we planned a surprise party for her on her actual birthday – June 28th. Wayne, the boys and I snuck into town without her knowing and tried to help my brother, Jimmy as much as we could with the set up and dinner preparations (although, he had it under control……and let’s face it, everyone’s better off if I stay out of the kitchen).
Mom thought that Jim, Jen, Matt & Jess were going to take her out to a fancy Ruth’s Chris dinner. Only, when she and Chuck arrived, it was a big SURPRISE!!!
Jimmy had the great idea of recreating a menu of Mom’s favorite foods growing up, only with some extra fancy Jimmy touches to them. So with the help of Auntie Jan and Aunt Kaytie, he was able to come up with a fabulous 3 course meal for 16 people.
He started with a chopped iceberg lettuce salad with an incredible homemade thousand island dressing. The second course was spaghetti with a very delicious tomato sauce and some garlic bread. Then for the main course he made a filet au poivre (don’t ask me what this is….I can only tell you that it was amazing) with mashed Yukon gold potatoes. The au poivre was a play on the gravy that Auntie Jan recalled having with beef and potatoes. Let me just say that Jimmy sure does know his way around a piece of meat
The food was so incredibly scrumptious that I forgot to take any pictures of it….bummerooski. We had planned to have a nice, relaxing setting and eat on the patio in Jim & Jen’s backyard. Change of plans, because it was raining! Really??? Rain at the end of June??? We didn’t let it ruin our plans though.
Here are some pictures from that night.
Waiting ever so patiently.
